Hair Twins is a wonderful book for kids that has AAPI representation. Written by Raakhee Mirchandani, Hair Twins shares the beautiful moments that happen between a father and daughter. In this book, a Sikh father does his daughter’s hair every morning before sending her off to school. Their bond is very special, and the father is an active participant in his daughter’s life. His interactions with his young daughter empowers her to confidently embrace her cultural identity.
Parents need to know that…
Diversity in children’s books matter, and this book places two ethnic characters front and center. This book depicts two Brown characters in a warm manner, and provides a fun, kid-friendly opportunity to discuss with kids the positive ways that parent-child duos can bond together.
This book provides content on family traditions from a cultural perspective. There are cultural words like “patka” and “turban”. It also provides an opportunity for parents to consider setting up a consistent “hair routine”, and empower kids to embrace different hairstyles.
The illustrations are playful, sweet and light-hearted. Illustrator Holly Hatam does a wonderful job with creating adorable hair-themed images, and creating colorful illustrations that creatively accentuate the text.
The themes of family, tradition and play will definitely resonate with younger readers. Parents will benefit from the warm tone of the book, which is an asset to parents seeking a gentle way to introduce new cultures to their younger kids or relatives.
In my opinion, this book is great for ages 2-6. However, this book is definitely a good fit for any parent, adult or teacher seeking to add children’s books with diverse characters to their library. Overall, I think that anyone can read this book and enjoy it.
